According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), Post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD)
is a disorder that develops in some people
who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

Some symptoms of PTSD include:

  1. Flashbacks—reliving the trauma over and over, including physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating
  2. Bad dreams
  3. Frightening thoughts
  4. Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience
  5. Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event
  6. Trouble remembering key features of the traumatic event
  7. Negative thoughts about oneself or the world
  8. Distorted feelings like guilt or blame
  9. Loss of interest in enjoyable activities
